Microphones & devices that work great with Auvi
Auvi works with any audio source your iPhone supports — the built-in microphone, AirPods, Bluetooth, USB-C, and Lightning accessories. But in some situations, a dedicated microphone can dramatically improve transcription accuracy.
We’ve tested every product on this page with Auvi. These are our honest recommendations.
AirPods & Earbuds
The simplest upgrade. AirPods sit close to your mouth and filter background noise, giving Auvi clearer audio in noisy environments.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
Active noise cancellation and Apple's H2 chip for excellent voice isolation. Transparency Mode lets you hear the room while Auvi transcribes. The best all-round option if you already use Apple products.
Best for: Everyday use, noisy environments, one-on-one conversations
AirPods (3rd generation / 4th generation)
Open-ear design means you hear the room naturally. No noise cancellation, but the microphone quality is excellent for transcription. Good for quieter environments where you want to stay aware of your surroundings.
Best for: Quiet environments, meetings, classrooms
Conference Microphones
For meetings with multiple speakers around a table, a conference microphone picks up voices from all directions and delivers far better results than your iPhone’s built-in mic.
Anker PowerConf S3
Omnidirectional Bluetooth conference speaker with 6 built-in microphones. Picks up voices clearly within a 3-metre radius. Connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth — Auvi automatically uses it as the audio source. Battery lasts all day.
Best for: Meeting rooms, group conversations, round tables
Jabra Speak2 55
Premium conference speaker with full-duplex audio and excellent noise cancellation. Connects via USB-C or Bluetooth. The gold standard for meeting room transcription.
Best for: Professional meetings, corporate use, presentations
Lapel (Lavalier) Microphones
Clip a lav mic to the speaker’s collar for the clearest possible audio. Ideal when you need to transcribe one person speaking from across a room — lectures, presentations, or medical consultations.
RODE Wireless GO II
Compact wireless microphone system. Clip the transmitter to the speaker; the receiver plugs into your iPhone via Lightning or USB-C (adapter may be required). Crystal-clear audio at up to 200 metres. Records onboard as backup.
Best for: Lectures, interviews, one-to-one consultations
RODE SmartLav+
Affordable wired lavalier that plugs into your iPhone’s headset port (3.5mm or Lightning adapter). Excellent voice quality in a tiny package. No batteries, no pairing — just plug in and go.
Best for: Budget option, simple setup, single speaker
Telephone & Landline Recording
iOS doesn’t allow apps to access phone call audio directly. But there are ways to get landline audio into Auvi for transcription.
USB Telephone Recorder (e.g. Olympus TP-8)
A small in-ear pickup that sits between your ear and the telephone handset, capturing both sides of the conversation. Connect to your iPhone via a USB audio interface or 3.5mm adapter, and Auvi will transcribe the call in real time.
Best for: Landline calls, office phones, home phones
Speakerphone + Device Placement
The simplest approach: put the phone call on speaker and place your iPhone nearby. Auvi hears both sides through the built-in microphone. Works for mobile, landline, and video calls. No extra hardware required.
Best for: Quick setup, no extra cost, any phone type
External Displays
Auvi can display large-format captions on a TV, monitor, or projector via AirPlay or HDMI. Great for classrooms, meetings, and events where everyone needs to see the captions.
Apple TV or any AirPlay display
Stream captions wirelessly to any AirPlay-compatible display. Apple TV is the simplest setup — just mirror your screen or use AirPlay directly from Auvi.
Best for: Classrooms, meeting rooms, events
USB-C to HDMI adapter
For a reliable wired connection, use a USB-C to HDMI adapter (or Lightning Digital AV Adapter for older devices). Zero latency, works with any TV or projector that has an HDMI input.
Best for: Presentations, venues, situations where Wi-Fi is unreliable
